Topic 4 subtopic 1 : Computer organization and microprocessor operation

The organization of a computer

Computer consists of five basic components, that is input, output, memory, datapath and control with system bus that act as communicaion channel for all othr components.

Datapath-is also called as ALU.A datapath (also call as ALU) is a set of functional units that function to process data.

Control-coordinates the components of a computer system.

Memory-is the inernal storage areas in a computer.

Input-devices that writes data to memory.

Output-devices that reads data from memory and convey result of the computation.

system bus-is a single computer bus that connects the major components of a computer system.

Microprocessor operations

Microprocessors use three steps commonly called Fetch, Decode, and Execute. In the Fetch step, an instruction is copied from the memory of the computer into the microprocessor. In the Decode step, the microprocessor figures out what operation the instruction is meant to do. In the Execute step, this operation is performed. The processors will repeat this three basic steps to execute one machine instruction..The process is call machine cycle.
